As the fresh blooms of May herald the arrival of spring, PBN invites you to embark on a journey through time and tradition. This Preservation Month, we’re not just reminiscing about the past; we’re actively engaging with it.
Join us as we kick off a month-long celebration with a series of events that are as enriching as they are entertaining. Starting with a preservation picnic to build momentum around our local landmark application for the historic Vaux Barn and ending with celebration preservation in WNY at our annual Preservation Awards Ceremony – this month’s event lineup offers something for everyone.
So, mark your calendars and prepare to be part of a movement that’s about more than just preserving buildings—it’s about fostering community.
May 2nd : Vaux Barn Preservation Pic-Nic, 6 PM
MLK Jr. Park – Shelter #5
Take action on the Vaux Barn! Nestled in the Olmsted-designed MLK Jr. Park, this event is a perfect blend of relaxation and historical appreciation. Bring your favorite picnic snacks and immerse yourself in an evening filled with enriching conversations about why the Vaux Barn is incredibly important, what we are doing to protect it from demolition and how you can help.

May 7th : Pastries and Preservation, 8 AM – 9AM

Wake up to the aroma of freshly baked pastries and the warmth of community spirit at Power City Eatery. Our Pastries and Preservation event is an invitation to savor delectable treats while participating in dynamic discussions about local preservation efforts. This is a casual gathering and all are welcome.
May 12 : Echoes of the Bold: The Daredevil Legacy of Niagara, 1 PM
Oakwood Cemetery – 763 Portage Rd, Niagara Falls, NY – 14301
Join us on Sunday, May 12th at 1 p.m. for a journey through the final resting places of the fearless and the bold. This special tour will be led by PBN’s Laura Fitzgerald, Director of Operations and Grant Management, a seasoned connoisseur of 19th and early 20th-century cemeteries.
As you meander through Oakwood’s paths lined with centuries-old trees, you’ll uncover the stories of those who dared to challenge the roaring waters of Niagara. The tour promises a reflective afternoon, steeped in the rich history of the Niagara Frontier.
The Daredevil Tour is more than another walking tour; it’s an immersive experience that resonates with the echoes of the past, inviting you to become a part of Niagara’s storied legacy.

May 18th : Broadway Historic District – Walking Tour, 1 PM

Discover the architectural treasures of the Broadway Historic District with a walking tour led by our Lead Preservationist & Architectural Historian, Brandon Kennedy. As we stroll through the Village of Lancaster, you’ll be captivated by the stories etched into the facades of the historic buildings. This tour is a must for anyone who cherishes the intricate tales of our built environment.

May 29th : Historic Tax Credit Workshop, 6 PM

Unlock the potential of Historic Tax Credits at our comprehensive workshop! Hosted in collaboration with Preservation Studios and Fillmore District Councilman Mitch Nowakowski, you’ll hear from the experts and have your questions answered. Ideal for homeowners and small-scale developers, this session will demonstrate how these credits can be a game-changer for your preservation projects. Join us at Debs Hall for an evening of education in one of Polonia’s historic taverns… and perhaps, enjoy a local beer or two while you learn. Beers and snacks will be available for purchase.

Celebrate the champions of preservation at our annual Preservation Awards. This prestigious event, held at the Buffalo History Museum, honors the individuals and organizations that have excelled in safeguarding Buffalo’s historical legacy. It’s an evening of accolades and aspirations, set against the backdrop of our city’s storied past.
