Preservation works best in communities where its principles are so deeply rooted that efforts are initiated and supported by a variety of public, civic, and private organizations and individuals. Preservation Buffalo Niagara (PBN) is committed to helping historic property owners maintain, rehabilitate, and restore their buildings and to do so, we can provide technical assistance in a variety of ways:
PBN firmly believes that a calculated, community-minded approach is essential to successfully protecting, preserving, and celebrating our region’s historic resources. Through our education and outreach initiatives, PBN empowers Western New York communities to champion historic preservation as a means for creating a more culturally-rich, affordable, and sustainable community.
Funding & Financial Incentives
For nonprofit organizations and businesses, PBN can help identify potential funding sources for your historic building project and assist in determining eligibility and applying to incentive programs, including historic tax credits.
Homeowner Historic Tax Credits
New York State’s Historic Homeownership Rehabilitation Tax Credit program provides a 20% state tax credit on qualified rehabilitation expenditures for owner-occupied properties listed in the State or National Register of Historic Places (either individually or as a contributing building in a historic district). PBN can answer your questions about eligibility and the application process.
PBN can help connect you to the institutions and resources that you can use to research historic properties or, as part of our Historic Plaque Program, we can do the research for you!
Undertaking surveys and developing local, State, and National Register historic districts and landmarks gives communities the information to determine what should be protected, and expands the tools available with which to do so. PBN can assist directly with these preservation planning tools or connect you with granting agencies and consultants to get the work done.
