Buffalo News Q&A: Bernice Radle on the Importance of Buffalo’s Historic Preservation

Executive Director in the News!

Thank you to the Buffalo News for the Prospectus Interview! You can read the full interview here.

Preservation really is the key to Buffalo’s past and future. They say it takes a village to raise a child. It takes a whole community to save a building.

Q: How much of a driving force has preservation and historic tax credits been for what’s happening?

A: We actually did a study last year. It’s called Everyone’s Heritage. This was with the Lipsey Architecture Center and Preservation Buffalo Niagara, on the impacts of historic preservation in Buffalo.

It’s really fascinating. Twenty-five percent of people who come to Buffalo, come for family and architecture. And 14% to 15% is just architecture. They’re coming for Frank Lloyd Wright, to see all the cool buildings in Allentown, to see several famous architects, like the Guaranty Building by Louis Sullivan, or the Richardson, all of these really incredible buildings.

But they’re also coming because they like our walkable, old city. It’s not just one architect, but that we are a historic city that has so much character that it actually means something to people.
